Funerals

What should I do if someone has died?

If you would like to hold the funeral of your loved one in church, and they lived within the parish of Meriden and Millisons Wood, your chosen undertaker can contact the church to discuss how we can best help.

We will arrange a visit to plan the service with you, choose the music and arrange for any support should you or your family need it. This applies whether you are considering a cremation or burial.

To contact us directly, please email our church warden at churchwarden.meriden@gmail.com

The Churchyard

St Laurence has a beautiful churchyard that is frequently visited, both by those who are remembering loved ones, as well as those who just wish to enjoy the quiet and the view and find it a really peaceful place. There is a group of very hard working local volunteers who strive to keep it looking as nice as possible, both for people to enjoy, as well as in honour of the departed.

As with all Church graveyards, St Laurence is governed by the Diocesan Churchyard Regulations. They were written to ensure that all gravestones and memorials are harmonious in appearance and integrate well into the established character of the churchyard.

They strive to take into account the needs of other families who have loved ones buried nearby, and those of present and future generations of visitors. Churchyards are also public and natural spaces that need to be managed in environmentally friendly ways.

For these reasons the following are not permitted on graves:

  • kerbs or edging.
  • chippings, stones or artificial turf.
  • memorials in the shape of a book or other unusual shape.
  • wind chimes or other wind-propelled items, lighting or solar propelled items.
  • plastic or other artificial flowers.
  • photographs of the deceased.
  • placing other items on graves in addition to the agreed memorial.
